The Most Common Causes Of Abnormal Uterine Bleeding In Younger Woman

It is healthy for women to experience uterine bleeding during their monthly menstrual cycle, and should not be cause for alarm. However, if the amount of blood that is being released is larger than normal or is outside of the monthly menstrual cycle, it could be an indicator of a serious health issue. Ignoring abnormal uterine bleeding can be dangerous, and should be discussed with an OBGYN. Many things can lead to an increased flow, some of which are non-life threatening. Anyone who is experiencing bleeding that they are concerned about should consider if one of the following causes could be the culprit.

Hormonal Imbalance

Estrogen levels are a crucial part of maintaining a healthy monthly cycle. If a woman’s hormone balance is askew, it can lead to abnormal vaginal discharge. While most commonly caused by poor nutrition, there are other serious issues involving the thyroid and other reproductive organs that could cause a woman to experience a period that is heavier than normal.

Benign Growths

Most women are stricken with fear when faced with the knowledge that they may have a growth that is responsible for abnormal bleeding. Though the growth will need to be tested for the presence of cancer, it is possible for cysts to form on the ovaries and lead to pain and excessive bleeding. These are typically not a reason for concern and can be removed easily with no long-term side effects.

Pregnancy Complications

Giving birth can lead to severe damage to the vaginal walls and reproductive organs. If these areas do not heal properly, it can cause abnormal bleeding. While it may not seem like a serious issue, it should be addressed by an OBGYN as soon as possible. A physician will be able to inspect the area and determine if the damage can be healed with medication or require a surgical procedure.

Preexisting Medical Conditions

It is important to discuss any other diagnoses that a person may have with the physician at the time of an appointment. Issues such as high blood pressure and blood clotting problems can cause excess bleeding and are commonly addressed with basic lifestyle changes and medication. It is also important to discuss any current medications that the patient may be on, as their side effects could cause irregular spotting.

Intrauterine Birth Control

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a type of birth control that requires placement of a device on the outside of the uterine wall. If the instrument shifts or becomes displaced, it can cause damage to the tissue present in the reproductive system and lead to excessive bleeding. An OBGYN can correct this issue by re-positioning the device back to its original location.

Women who have given birth to 3 or more children are more likely to experience the complications associated with Adenomyosis. This common condition occurs when the endometrium expands into the sides of the uterine wall. In addition to severe bleeding, this condition can also cause extreme pain in the abdomen and pelvic region. Diagnoses of this nature typically require surgery to fully correct.

Cancerous Growths

The most detrimental issue that can cause abnormal vaginal bleeding is the presence of a malignant tumor. The OBGYN will likely perform a biopsy of the infected area and have it tested for the presence of cancer. Depending on the size of the tumor, it may require surgery and other treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Don’t let uterine bleeding continue for an extended period, when catching it early can prevent a more serious health complication.

Don’t allow uterine health problems to go unchecked. Schedule an appointment with an OBGYN and alleviate any fears that may be present because of an abnormal amount of vaginal bleeding. While it is terrifying in the moment, most issues can be corrected with simple procedures, and have a woman back to optimal health in no time.
